GILLMEISTER, Harold 1912 – 2013

* * *

Harold died Friday, March 1st, at home with his family in Hudson, Quebec. Born in Montreal over 100 years ago, he grew up in Outremont and was educated

in Montreal and California. He enjoyed a satisfying career in engineering and management at RCA and Aviation Electric, and then, post-retirement, a second career at Mirage Yachts. His love for boating began in the 1920s during family summers in the beautiful lakeside town of Hudson, which later became his full-time home. There, he and his late wife Shirley brought up three daughters: Lynda (Allan Case), the late Joanne, and Mary.

He has been a member of the Hudson Yacht Club since 1928. Over the years he built and raced eight sail boats of the National and Y-Flyer classes and served in countless roles. In recognition of his lifelong contribution to the boating community, the club created the title Honorary Life Commodore for him. Although a passionate sailor, he also had a keen love of engines, and raced his own hand-built outboard speedboats in the 1930’s. This love extended to automobiles, from his first Hupmobile to his final vintage Mercedes roadster. He was a founding member of the Montreal Motor Racing Club at Mt.  remblant, member of the Hudson Antique Car Klub and probably Canada’s oldest Formula One fan. Winter was for skiing, from the early days of the JB Ski Club to cross-country on the Lake of Two Mountains and environs of Hudson.

Sadly, he outlived his four younger siblings: Wilfred, Elsie, Eric and Helga; but his nieces and nephews continued to stimulate, amuse and value him. His healthy longevity was fueled by a variety of interests, activities and the many friends involved over his century. From Edison to Ford to Hughes to Jobs, he was always learning.

We thank Violeta Valientes, his wonderful caregiver for over seven years; Betty, Judy, and Wanda, the dedicated nurses of NOVA Hudson, for their help at any hour. Please consider a donation in Harold’s memory. http://www.novahudson.com/Donations.htm

Funeral arrangements are private but in the near future the family will welcome friends at a reception at the Yacht Club to share stories of Harold.
