It is with tremendous sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved mother, Florence Moncrieff Elliott, aged 86. Florence passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side after a lengthy battle with cancer. Florence, also known as Flo or Flossie, was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Roy Elliott, in 2024. She leaves behind her three daughters Andrea, Lisa and Linda, along with five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Ken and both his family and that of her late brother Marvin’s, which includes numerous nephews and nieces.
Florence began her life in the mining town of Kilmar, Quebec, born to loving parents Mildred, a baby nurse and William, a train engineer for the mine. Always a keen student with a love of learning, after high school, Florence decided on a teaching career and attended MacDonald College to become an Elementary School Teacher along with her childhood best friend, Lenora. Upon graduation, both she and Lenora were chosen to teach the children of families stationed on Canadian Armed Forces Bases. This was the beginning of an incredible opportunity to fulfill her love of teaching and to travel. They started out in Quebec City at the Val Cartier Base before moving on to Germany, where during their holidays, they travelled through Europe and to the Middle East, having amazing adventures and meeting people from all over the world. A few years later they returned to Quebec and eventually taught up north in Schefferville, which is where she met her future husband, Roy. Following their wedding and the birth of Andrea, they moved to Como, Quebec, where their family expanded again with the arrival of Lisa and Linda.
Motherhood became Florence’s full-time job as her three young daughters kept her very busy. Her family was her priority, and we were incredibly privileged to have a truly devoted mother. Both a talented chef and seamstress, mum always ensured we had amazing homemade food and beautiful tailor-made clothing (including Halloween costumes!). We received endless encouragement and support to pursue our countless interests and endeavors, where even our smallest successes were celebrated.
Another full-time job for Florence was supporting her husband Roy, with all of his hobbies. Our mum good-naturedly endured holidays booked around antique car shows, road trips with unplanned vintage car breakdowns and life continuously being rescheduled due to movie shoots. As all who knew her would agree, she had the patience of a saint! She also enjoyed helping out within the community as an active volunteer with the local schools, churches and music club. Florence was also an avid lifelong learner who continued to take courses to improve her knowledge and skills as the world evolved around her.
Regardless of what was going on in her life, Florence always made time for everyone who needed her, making them feel special. Whether she spoke to you on the phone or saw you in person, she always wanted to know how you were, how your day was going, to hear news of your families – all the important details of your life because she genuinely cared. She remembered everything you told her because she was one of those rare people who really listened. She touched the lives of everyone who knew her because she was such a gentle, sweet soul. Her special gift of kindness meant that she was loved and respected by so many that knew her. That was our mum, a woman whose heart truly was filled with unconditional love.
Some of the most important lessons she taught her family were to find the good in everyone and to leave the world a better place than when you arrive. Florence most certainly did that and we feel so incredibly blessed to have had her as our mother. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Family and friends are invited to attend a “Celebration of Life” on July 20th, 2025, at the Centre Créatif Hudson / Hudson Creative Hub (formerly St. Mary’s Church Hall), 273 Main Road, Hudson, from 1:00pm-3:00pm, to honour our beautiful mother, Florence.
We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Marie Leclair, Dr. Shen Li and all of the phenomenal local organizations who helped to support both our mother and ourselves, including NOVA, the CLSC and the Hudson Palliative Care Centre. We don’t know how we would have managed without everyone’s outstanding care and incredible compassion.
