BURTON, Beverley Grace (née Smith) 1940-2023

In Loving Memory of Beverley Grace Burton
September 10, 1940 – October 21, 2023

Beverley Grace Burton, the heart and soul of her family and the communities she touched, passed away on October 21, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, and son, Derek, and is survived by sons, Marc and Scott (Natalie), and grandchildren, Lily and Miles. They will forever cherish the memories of a mother and grandmother who taught them to find joy in every moment.

Born in Lachine, QC, to Frank and Girlie Smith, Bev grew up in Baie d’Urfé. She and her older sister Lyn attended The Sacred Heart School of Montreal and enjoyed an active social life, skiing, sailing, and chasing after boys.

As a young woman stepping into the world on her own, Bev worked at Bell Telephone in Montreal as a switchboard operator, skillfully navigating the switchboard on roller skates to connect calls. She later worked part-time at Birks to make Christmas extra special for her boys.

Bev’s true passion was for the family she created with her loving husband Edward, and the community they called home. Moving between towns in Quebec, Ontario, and New York before settling in Hudson, she had a knack for creating a welcoming home for her family wherever they lived. Hudson, with its rural charm, provided endless opportunities for her young family, and she embraced them with open arms.

Always staying active, Bev loved to golf, travel and play bridge. She also enjoyed quieter pursuits like going to the theatre, watching figure skating, or bird-watching in her backyard. Bev’s involvement in the Hudson Yacht Club, Cub Scouts, Meals on Wheels, and every children’s sports team imaginable, was a testament to her dedication to her family and her community.

Thanks to her fun-loving spirit, Bev forged countless friendships that wove the rich tapestry of her life. She was far from a saint, but that’s precisely what made her so special. She also enjoyed close bonds with her son’s friends who appreciated her sense of humour and the genuine interest she took in their lives. Later on in her life, her two grandchildren became a source of pride and delight.

Bev was an extraordinary woman who embraced life, family, and her community with unbridled enthusiasm. Her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.

A celebration of her life will be held from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, November 25th, 2023 at the Murphy Mansion at 647 Main Road in Hudson.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Health Nova Hudson in Beverley’s name, continuing her legacy of community spirit and connection.  https://www.novahudson.com/Donations.htm
