CALLAHAN, Gerald 1941-2020

On Friday November 20th, 2020 surrounded by those who loved him, Gerald (Gerry) Callahan from Saint-Lazare, Quebec passed away peacefully at the age of 79. Gerry will be sadly missed by his wife of almost 54 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Shufler and his children, Brent (Janice) and Brenda. Loving grandfather of Laura, Brian, Julia, Jessica and Breanna. Gerry was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and was predeceased by his father Bart, mother Louise and sister Joan.

Gerry was a well-respected math teacher at Pius X, where he met multiple life long friends and future golf buddies, including Kevin Marciniak and the late Pat Ferraro and Frank Nash.  Life long friends, Kevin and Mary O’Connor shared many family milestones together. He was blessed with an amazing group of family and friends who put up and encouraged his antics and humor.

We are grateful for the excellent care Gerry received from so many people including Anna, Tamara, Dr. Goh, Dr. Welik and Wanda just to name a few of his caregivers that made his journey easier.

If you wish to donate, please consider a donation to NOVA Hudson or a charity of your choice.

Due to pandemic restrictions, a Celebration of Life and internment will be held when public gatherings can be done safely. Gerry’s final resting place will be in the Field of Honour in Pointe-Claire, Quebec.

Deepest sympathies to you and your family. Mr. Callahan was one of my favourite teachers and inspired me to pursue an education in STEM. I became an engineer because of my love for math and solving problems….our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.

Mr. Callahan was my geometry teacher, by far and away my best and most enjoyable class. He was a great teacher who captivated the class. He was tough on the surface but had a very subtle sense of humor. I remember the near-perfect circles he could draw on the chalkboard. He was one of the very best at Pius X, and the only class I remember fondly.
    RIP Mr.Callahan

Somehow God has lead me to this page. I am deeply sorrowed by his passing.

Mr. Callahan was my high school math teacher at St Pius X class of ’90 in Montreal. One time during class while tackling a problem, he told us one of the best lines I have ever heard and still use to date. ” You guys can’t see the forest because of the trees” because we were over complicating it. Best advice ever. Thank you Sir for teaching us in school and in life..
